From the "Weekend Mail"
May 6-10, 1954
The caption under the main photograph reads:- Heres a selection of the Handlebar Clubs 111 moustaches. Left to right: Cup winner Harry Hollingsworth, Alan Gear, John Roy his 16½in. wonder tickled Barbara Kelly on TV Ted Hooker, and Alan Beck. John Biddulph, at back, is out of his class. The main report:- There were embarrassing moments when reporter Arthur Redford
and cameraman Frank Rust turned up at a London pub for the Handlebar Clubs annual
Moustache Championship. False alarm President Raymond Glendenning, the B.B.C. commentator, was
there, but the scissors had been at his whiskers. Comedian Jimmy Edwards, the clubs
only Vice, was unable to be present, and the scare got around that the Edwards ticklers
had been trimmed down to a toothbrush. And the caption under the small picture is:- George Bromage is licensee of a pub where the club sometimes meets.
