Report No. 2

The first full meeting of the HANDLEBAR Club was held at the WINDMILL Theatre on Sunday, April 20th immediately after the Dress Rehearsal.

The early arrivals for the club meeting were photographed on the stage with some of the WINDMILL Girls. These included:-

President RAYMOND GLENDENNING and Vice-President JIMMY EDWARDS with showgirls LESLIE LORNE and LISBETH KEARNS.
Secretary BILL HOOPER with showgirl MAVIS GREENAWAY.
"Flying Officer Kite" with starlet ANITA D’RAY.
Founder Member FRANK MUIR with dancer PAT HAMILTON,
and ‘RUSS’ ALLEN with dancer ROSALIE WITHAM (‘RUSS’ was recently mobbed by Mayfairs bright young things at the MILROY when they attempted to detach his five-and-a-half inch moustache from his face, claiming it was false).
As more members arrived, a group was taken of the above mentioned together with 'JEEP' ORMESBY of the South African Army, Squadron Leader NOEL HENKEL, Captain HARE and founder member HOFFMAN (who was later voted Premier Pilositer for possessing the largest moustache in the club, to date).

On the arrival of Mr. A. EDWARDS, Major JOHN BIDDULPH, GERALD LANYON, TED HOOPER, BARON de BEER, DONALD RAY, TONY SNELL, F/O PARKER and J. HARRUP, the meeting commenced with RAYMOND GLENDENNING presiding, assisted by Vice-President JIMMY EDWARDS and Secretary BILL HOOPER.

Reporting the proceedings for the press was GEOFFREY DICKENS, who being in possession of a moustache which qualified him for full membership, applied and was accepted. Photographer ‘BISH’ MARSHALL also expressed a desire for membership, but his lip lichen was formed into what is known colloquially as a ‘Hollywood Halo' and so he undertook to grow to required lengths and was put on the list of "Applicants Growing" until such time as the integument shall cover the arable areas of his upper lip.

Motions raised and passed:-

(a) That the club shall be for men wearing a large moustache and for the promotion of the growing of large moustaches.
Monthly meetings shall be held for this purpose and for furry fraternising in suitably convivial surroundings of licensed premises. When such premises are decided upon, Members will be informed.

(b) That those present could receive Member status by their attendance upon this occasion, in the case of those Members who's mouth moss had not yet covered the required lengths, (five inches from wing tip to wing tip) they gave a guarantee to do so forthwith.

(c) That the yearly subscription shall be the sum of One Pound, payable on nomination. This sum will be used for club expenses such as Stationery, Postage etc., and the Secretary, until a treasurer can be appointed, shall be responsible for this.

(d) Since the time was by now almost seven and this was Sunday opening time in the vicinity, a motion to adjourn was unanimously carried.

WINDMILL Press Representative, KENNETH H. BANDY, ably assisted with suggestions throughout and also arranged for press photographers to be present. Copies of photographs taken can be purchased, the Secretary has the information on this.

Members, Founder Members and Applicants, with the Committee spent the remainder of the evening in festive surroundings comparing hair raising experiences, dispersing at the significant hour of ten o'clock.

Members - Henkel, Ormesby, Hoffman and Muir were formed into a Qualification Committee.

Meeting and results were featured in the "Daily Herald".
